Kit Siang gets crowd going with 'gostan' By K. Suthakar

PENANG: Gostan, a Malay colloquial word for reverse, has become the favourite catchphrase of DAP secretary-general Lim Kit Siang at a ceramah last Saturday.

The DAP secretary-general, who is contesting against municipal council president Dr Teng Hock Nan in the Kebun Bunga state seat, had the crowd in stitches when, at the Bangkok Lane ceramah, he challenged Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon and Dr Teng to go up the single-lane RM7.95mil Autopont flyover when cars were lined up bumper-to-bumper and see whether they could gostan into Jalan Masjid Negri during heavy traffic _a suggestion Dr Teng made on Sept 1.

HITTING OUT. . . Kit Siang stressing a point during his speech at bangkok lane last Saturday.

Touching on Penang's filth, he said it had become worse and blamed the council for not doing a good job.

"Penang has been gostaning on this," he said to more laughter.

On George Town which was excluded from the list of six cities in the country by the Housing and Local Government Ministry, he said it was unfair.

Stressing that Penang was the first city in the country to be accorded city status in 1957, he said: "Under Dr Teng, Penang has gostan and gostan till city status pun habis (lost its city status)".
