PAS confident of taking Terengganu

KUALA TERENGGANU: PAS claims it has penetrated many Umno strongholds in Terengganu and is confident of wresting the state from Barisan Nasional. PAS state commissioner Abdul Hadi Awang said he saw signs of victory as the people had expressed their concern and disappointment with the Barisan state government.

"We have penetrated Umno strongholds such as Setiu and Kemaman. It is a good indication of what we can achieve this time," he said in an interview.

In the past, PAS concentrated on the Marang, Kuala Terengganu, Kuala Nerus and Dungun parliamentary seats and all the state seats under these constituencies.

Hadi said that PAS was confident of winning some seats in grey areas such as Besut and Hulu Terengganu.

He said that PAS had put up the most capable candidates for this election.

"God willing, we will be able to make it this time," he said.

The last time PAS came to power in the state was in 1959 but it fell within two years after an internal crisis.

In the 1990 general election, the party reduced the state Barisan's two-thirds majority.

In 1995, it failed to capture the state despite its Tahun Tawan Terengganu (Year of Capturing Terengganu.

On the other hand, Terengganu Barisan chairman Tan Sri Wan Mokhtar Ahmad believed the ruling state government would win with a more comfortable majority than in the last general election.
