Lim: Have a Deputy Speaker from the opposition

PETALING JAYA: The DAP has called for a Barisan Alternatif MP to be appointed as a Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker.

Party national chairman Lim Kit Siang said this would ensure the 10th Parliament was "more consultative and committed to reform."

"Parliamentary Opposition Leader Datuk Fadzil Noor should be consulted as to who will be the Speaker of the 10th Parliament, whether Tun Zahir Ismail would serve a fifth term or whether Barisan Nasional has a new candidate," Lim said in a statement yesterday.

He was commenting on the fact that two Deputy Speakers would have to be appointed as Datuk Ong Tee Keat has been appointed Deputy Youth and Sports Minister while Datuk Juhar Mahiruddin did not contest in the elections.

In Penang on Saturday night, Lim directed party candidates to serve the people despite losing in the elections.

He said they must also reorganise the party for the next elections.

"A review will be made after two years to decide whether to field the same candidates or replace them, " he said at the party's dinner for Bukit Bendera election workers.
