Declare assets too, Samy told

IPOH: Social activist Dr D. Jeyakumar who declared his assets here yesterday challenged Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu to do the same. Dr Jeyakumar, who is challenging the MIC president for the Sungai Siput parliamentary seat, said the incumbent should declare his assets to be fair to the people.

"Today, I am declaring my assets and it is Parti Sosialis Malaysia policy that whoever is contesting in the election must declare his assets as the person is a public figure.

"We want the public to know how much money the candidate has because when you join politics you are not supposed to become rich but it is a norm here that most people get very rich after becoming politicians," he told a press conference here after handing out signed documents stating his assets.

The document stated that Dr Jeyakumar has a house worth RM100,000, a 13-year-old Mazda 626 worth RM12,000 and a 26-year-old Volkswagen worth RM7,000.

It also recorded that Dr Jeyakumar has a total of RM22,383.81 in savings, RM100 in National Land and Finance Co-operative shares and 2,000 units in Southern Bank Unit Fund.
