Dear Friends,

Re: People Lodge Police Report Against Prime Minister in Caretaker Government

Several people intend to lodge a police report against the Prime Minister of the present caretaker government. The mass media carries everyday statements by the Prime Minister about the possibility of riots if the opposition loss in the coming general elections. The sum effect of such statements is the creation of fear in the hearts of ordinary Malaysians. Such fear intimidates the people and prevents the coming election from being free and fair. The people are led to believe that they have only two choices: to vote the Barisan Nasional and have stability or vote the opposition and have riots.

The People Manifesto feels that for too long Malaysians have allowed the nation’s leaders to bully and intimidate them. They want to put a stop to this type of intimidation immediately. They are taking this step to lodge a police report so that the police can act in the interests of national security. National leaders must be made to realize that they were chosen to act in the interests of the people and not against them.

By this action the people are calling upon the police force to prove that their interest is to ensure security of the people. No one in the country should be allowed to hold a knife to the throats of the people and get away with it. By this action the people want the leaders in the mass media too to face up to the reality that they are playing with fire by publishing and broadcasting such threats to the people. In other words the people hold the leaders accountable for their words and deeds. The people demand that their leaders and their public institutions be responsible.

The details of the lodging of the police report are as follows:

Date: Friday, 19th November, 1999 Venue: Stadium Police Station (IPD DangWangi), Jalan Stadium, Kuala Lumpur (opposite to Stadium Negara) Time: 11am

We invite you to participate in this action to hold our leaders accountable for their actions. We want to take back the people’s right to a free and fair elections. We want to say that the people are no longer convinced by lies put out by the leaders. Let us show our leaders that we demand to treated fairly and justly. Please come in large numbers to ensure the effectiveness of this action.

Yours truly, Charles Santiago (On Behalf of People’s Manifesto Initiative)
